Last month saw a guilty plea in Australia’s first criminal prosecution for creating sexually explicit “deepfake” images without consent. The case comes after the government announced its intention last September to legislate against so-called “nudify” apps victimising both adults and children, and the eSafety Commission has been eager to publicise its actions against such apps operating in Australia.
Criminal cases show that government and courts are taking this form of harm seriously. But experts in child safety are bringing a multifaceted response to technologically facilitated image-based sexual abuse, including education for both children and adults, victim-centred responses and restorative justice.
